Medtronic:
The maker of the pacemaker has developed an outpatient procedure called InterStim® Therapy. Medtronic InterStim Therapy helps the bladder better communicate with your brain by stimulating the connecting nerves with mild electrical pulses. When more conservative treatment options like pelvic floor therapy or medications are unsuccessful or cannot be tolerated, Medtronic InterStim Therapy is an option that helps control symptoms of overactive bladder (OAB). Patients who undergo this treatment start with 3-7 day trial assessment whereby a thin, flexible wire is inserted into the sacral nerves at the base of the spine. This is a quick, outpatient procedure that, in most cases, allows patients to return to low to moderate daily activities within a day or two. If the trial is successful, your doctor will discuss the long-term Medtronic InterStim Therapy solution, which involves implanting a neurostimulator during an outpatient procedure.
